BRC Area 17 Winter Dressage Qualifier at Sparsholt
The first area qualifier of the year was the winter dressage held at Sparsholt near Winchester on 8th January.
Vectis sent both a junior and senior team, with many of our competitors being in a team for the first time and some not having competed on the Mainland before. Luckily, it was good weather with some sunny spells as 2 of the 3 arenas were outdoors and apart from some of our competitors getting lost on the way there, we all had a good day with no big hiccups. Our junior team consisted of Paige Richards (Gins Alfresco), Clarissa Arberry (Nutkin Feather Duster), Courtney Sandison (Reenascreena Diamond) and Marni Stubbs (Maxamillion Matterhorn). The team finished in 4th place out of 7 teams with the New Forest taking top place and the I.W. Riding Club coming 2nd and 3rd. Paige did extremely well to finish first in her Test (Prelim. 18)
As usual, problems arose in the last few days before the competition, when Tracey Howe’s pony was unable to compete. Marni Stubbs came to the rescue and offered Tracey the ride on Max and after one trial ride the day before, Tracey put in a very creditable performance to finish 7th in Prelim 18. The other members of the team were Linda Allen (Broadstone Lovebug), Louise Watson (Dassa) and Louise Hawkins (Truway Duke) who came away with 4th place in Test 18 (section 2). The team finished in 7th place out of 23 teams. In addition, Louise Hawkins did a lovely test for the Windsor qualifier, which gained her first place and the chance to compete at the Windsor Horse Show. Well done to all of them and thank you to the band of supporters
who helped in any way.

AGM at the Chequers 17 November
The Club AGM took place on the 17th November 2011 at the Chequers at Rookley and had a very good attendance. Our Chairman Di Andrews started the meeting by paying special tribute to Sue Lightbown who had very recently and unexpectedly passed away. She would be very sadly missed by everyone. She then continued with her report for the past year.
The club had had another packed year of activities with our main competitive competitions being our affiliated and unaffiliated dressage. The standard of dressage has steadily increased over the years, and at our last competition we had four riders in the Prix St Georges, a notable achievement. We had also run a range of other events from spider and competitive endurance rides to fun days and picnics for the juniors and also our popular showing show. Our training evenings with Robert Booth also continue to be well supported year round, Robert really now deserves a long service medal! We had also had some success at area dressage competitions, with Trudi Gatrell qualifying for the Dressage to Music Finals at Aintree where she finished a very creditable 12th in very high class company. Our endurance team of Mandy and Emily Steen, Caroline Cooper and Hilary Box competed at the Endurance Finals in Berkshire finishing 3rd in the novice section. Endurance is a fairly new addition to our schedule of events, organised by committee member Anna Lek who has vast experience in this discipline.
Our annual quiz held in April attracted a healthy number of teams with the Hunt Supporters being the victors for the first time. We then moved on to our Treasurers Report. Sally McIntosh our treasurer reported that our club had a very healthy bank balance of £2,758.00 with our income over expenditure for the year being £1,324.00. This is mainly due to the fact that we hadn’t sent as many teams to area competitions over the past couple of years. We are always keen to send teams so PLEASE contact us if you would like to be included for next years competitions. Sally thanked Peter Warren for his continued support by auditing our accounts.
The meeting continued with the re-election of committee members and the presentation of the annual awards. Di then thanked the present committee for all their hard work running the club and all of the members who make our club such a nice group to be a part of.

John Lassetter Clinic
The John Lassetter clinic was a great opportunity for Island riders to gain from his vast experience. Trudi did a brilliant job arranging him coming over to Judge at the Affiliated dressage on Sunday followed by the clinic the next day. Many thanks to Trudi, Fliss & Rodney for their hard work. Those having lessons really enjoyed them and it is hoped that he will come back to the Island soon.
I took my four year old mare Chelesto to the John Lassetter clinic held at Lake Farm. John introduced himself by offering Chelesto a choice of polo or sugar lump, and after she ungreatfully spat two polos on the floor we started the lesson. He spent time at the beginning finding out about the horse’s background and what we’d done together so he had a good idea of what we were (or were not) capable of.
The arena looked like an obstacle course with traffic cones and poles placed strategically all around the indoor school, however once the lesson got underway it became clear how these were put to good use really helping to make sure shapes were ridden accuratley and that movements were set up correctly, and the poles to make the horse really work properly. It also helped to keep Chelesto occupied by giving her lots to look at and think about.
We started off riding simple loops and circles, and progressed to lateral work and counter canter by the end of the lesson. As well as working on the horses way of going John concentrated on the rider too, ensuring correct position and aids. He followed us around the arena constantly talking us through the movements so it was almost as if he was riding through them with us.
By the end of the 45 minutes I don’t know who was most exhausted out of me or Chelesto but I came away feeling that it had been a very productive lesson and was really pleased with what we achieved. I look forward to having another lesson when he returns to the island.

Showing & Show Jumping Show at Godshill 24 July
Our luck held, weatherwise, and, after weeks of showers, the sun came out at last. This meant that late entries, on the day of the show, boosted numbers by three times, with as many as 11 in the Riding Club Horse/Pony Club, which was won by Paula Kusserow & Silver, beating Hilary Box & the versatile The Stig into second place. The Stig was the winner of the Hunter Class and, also, took 2 seconds in the Jumping Classes. Other winners in Ring One were Shannon Cox on Liquorice Allsorts (under 13h. Hunter Pony); Courtney Sandison with Pitty Beck Page Boy (13-15h.h. Hunter pony) & Blue Bailey-Hunt riding Silver (Riding Pony). A special mention must be made of Anna Lek who to her delight won the Riding Horse Class with The Stealer. Anna has suffered a very unpleasant illness which confined her to her bed for several weeks in the winter and it is a great achievement for her to be riding again. The last Class in Ring one was the Coloured Horse/Pony which attracted a good entry and was won by Robyn Stilwood on My Lucky Liz. Our Ring One Judge Mrs. Hazel Long from the New Forest took time to talk to the competitors and to give them advice or encouragement. She also commented on the friendliness of the show and, kindly, put her travel expenses back into Club Funds, as she said she had enjoyed the day.
Jan Brundrett, with daughter Susie stewarding, judged some well filled classes in Ring Two, and it was especially pleasing to see so many young riders having a go. Jan, who has won a great many show classes in the past with her Wylye Pink Panther, cast a critical eye over the turnout classes and awarded top marks in the large class to Claire Hartley & Tipperary Leader while the small class went to 4 year old Lewis Sheath on Mai, although I suspect that most of the grooming was done by Mum, Laura. The Leading Rein was won by Holly Mariner who also took the prize for best rider, riding Hobbs, who is shared by brother Jack. Jack & Hobbs came second in 1st Ridden, being beaten by Sophie Tickle on Crivic Oliver. The Child Handler had only 2 competitors in the under 15 years, but competition was keen with Chaise Davies-Upsall & Holly emerging as winner. The younger class was better supported and won by Lorna Lee leading Maximus. The Veteran Class was another hotly contested with Lisa Chambers & Maximus triumphing over 2nd placed Tina Murrant & Bleakdown Bacchus.
Dressage Rider Vicky Clark judged the Riding Class and chose Clarissa Arberry riding Little Joey’s Joy as her top rider with Shannon Cox taking best rider under 11 and 3rd overall. . Vicky’s other 2 classes the Prettiest Mare & Handsomest Gelding went to Georgina Gifford on Greta and Zoe Lortal on Jesse.
The serious classes were followed by some very noisy and hugely entertaining games. It was great to see some very young (and some not so young riders! ) letting their hair down. Holly & Jack Mariner took the Walk & Trot classes in their respective age groups, while Yvonne Lortal revealed a very competitive streak winning Trot & Run, Potato Race & Bending.; the Egg & Spoon Race going to Elizabeth Barton.
The Jumping Ring run by Helen Wood & her helpers was kept busy all day, with a very good percentage of clear rounds in all the classes. The Minimus was won by Morgan Williams on Allendale Gemma, while the 2’3” went to Alice McLean & May. The largest class of the day, the 2’6” was won after a timed jump off by Sue Nye & Digby . The 2’9” was won, also after a timed double clear, by Jade Davies on Gobinstown Lad. Amy Hose & Squirrel took the 3’ with the only clear in the jumpoff while Claire Hartley & Angus Airways took the Top Score.
My thanks to the many people who made this such an enjoyable show; to our judges & stewards and innumerable backroom helpers.

Area 17 Team Dressage Qualifier 17 July at Broadlands
Team Members: Tracey Howe, Heather Nelson, Louise Hawkins, Kirsty Newnham
It was an early start for all of us but we managed to arrive at the ferry in convoy – On Time! After a short drive to the lovely Broadlands estate we declared our team – and then the rain came! All of the horses were very well behaved despite being soaked through (along with their riders!), securing very respectable results of 6th place in the team Prelim tests, and 5th place in the riding tests 11 and 13. After waiting for our rosettes the sun began to shine and we came home shattered but happy! The whole day was very relaxed in a lovely venue, which appeared to be enjoyed by all members of the many participating clubs.

Evening Dressage 8 July at Godshill
Waking to the sound of heavy rain on the morning of the evening dressage, I wondered if, weatherwise, our luck had run out. However, in the nick of time the sun came out and a strong wind dried up the ground to give us good going for the evening’s competition.
We had good entries for our judges Linda Allen and Sue Thwaites to mark, but our evening started with just two young riders competing in the introductory class. This was won by Leah McIntosh on family pony, Millie, followed closely into second place by 4 year old Lewis Sheath who was swiftly whipped home to bed following his test! The Restricted class was won by a large margin by Louise Hawkins on Truway Duke, while Test 7 went to Anna Reed making her debut on her regular hunter, Mr. Perkins. This was greatly astonishing to Anna, as she had to be persuaded that she was more than capable of performing Test 7 after we banned her from entering the Intro. A. She only caved in when we convinced her how embarrassing it would be to be beaten by someone on the leading rein!
The largest class of the evening was Test 12 which Dawn Norris won with a small lead on Glen Frederick, with Louise Hawkins and Truway Duke close behind. Dawn, also, triumphed in novice 27 this time with a 22 mark lead over runner up Beate Parsons on Paganini.
My thanks, as usual, to a great team of helpers and to our excellent judges.

Dressage Festival 19 June 2011 at Godshill
Yet again, the Club proved extremely lucky with the weather for the dressage festival, with rain earlier in the week providing ideal conditions underfoot, but with the day itself staying dry (if a little windy). Entries were up in the 90s with large numbers in both of the combined classes. Alison Judge won both of these, one on each of her two rides, scoring good marks from dressage judge, Vicky Clark, and scoring zero & 4 penalties in the show jumping phase. Test 4 which was also a Royal Windsor qualifier was, also, keenly contested with Alison Judge taking 1st & 2nd spots, followed by Louise Hawkins, Jennifer Attrill and Katie Gates.
Although numbers were lower in the novice competitions, the quality was high. Tracey Howe & her pony stallion, Oakmill Leonardo won Test 24, and Linda Allen (yet another new surname!) & Broadstone Lovebug came first in Test 28 beating 2nd placed Truway Daphne & Kirsty Newnham by less than 1 point.
Although scoring the same marks in the restricted Test 4, Janet Morter & Gracie took first place over Maria Young’s Haylands Masai Mara by virtue of achieving the higher collective marks. Our other prelim. (Test 12) was another with two riders on the same score which meant that Mary Harding & Dreamers Boy and Louise Hawkins on Truway Duke shared 1st place.
Luckily, for family harmony, the two sibling pairs in the introductory classes managed to achieve the same results. Maddy McIntosh winning Intro A & younger sister Leah taking Vectis A, both sharing Millie. While 2nd place in this class was shared by Holly & Jack Mariner, again taking turns on family pony, Hobbs. I am sure both mothers breathed a sigh of relief at this fortunate result! Our thanks to our lovely judges Vicky, Jan Drewett & Judith Goold; the last two very kindly saying how much they enjoyed their visit to the Island (in no small way due to Jane’s wonderful lunch, I’m sure).
Thanks to Trudi Gattrell who has, so ably, taken over the job of entry secretary; to her mum, Fliss Crouch & to Bev Snudden, for stewarding; our writers Wendy Warren, Trish Collins & Jackie Woodford; numbers secretary Linda Greenfield; scorer Chris Foulkes; Carla Maskell, Helen Wood & Tracey Parker at the Show Jumping Ring; Mandy Steen for her jumps; our Committee plus Dave Sheath & Steve (of rabbit hole fame) for setting it up and a host of other tasks & of course our wonderful hospitality hostess, Jane Frost. Apologies if I’ve missed anyone. In addition, we had a handful of hardworking juniors; Maddy, Leah, Lizzie & Jessica bringing in the scores.
As you can see, it takes a whole battalion of people to run a successful event, so if you can spare an hour or two at an event please give one of us a ring.By Di Andrews

Competitive Ride & Spider Ride at Little Kennerly - 15th May 2011
more photos
Coalition has been a much debated subject of late but one coalition which seems to be strengthening is that between the Mountain & Moorland and the Vectis Equestrian Club. Whether we can draw further analogies I am not sure!!
The second jointly organised ride was held on Sun 15th May from Dawn Webster’s Yard at Godshill. The day was bright and sunny but with a rather chilly north westerly breeze; chilly for the helpers but welcome for the riders and their mounts.
Thirteen riders took part in the competitive ride and there was also a good turnout for the spider ride. David Cameron (sorry...David cameraman) was there photographing the starters and finishers– we look forward as always to the seeing the final snaps!!On that note – Fliss Crouch has announced that her horse Tarran sees David at the start with his camera and knows it is a competitive ride, setting off a bit like a sprinter hearing a starting pistol!! As I ride with Fliss I can confirm this to be true!
So, off we went. The route was fabulous. From the start to The Chequers Inn via Budbridge, Chillerton, Snowdrop Lane to Bowcombe, and up to the top of Chillerton Down. It was while ascending this path we looked back and spotted the next group – Mandy & Emily Steen partnered by Caroline Cooper a very short distance behind us. They clearly hadn’t been wasting any time! Now, Fliss is a competitive sort of lady, so we decided we should step the pace up a gear!! Well, this put paid to our intellectual conversation about such topics as Shopping, ‘Come Dine With Me ‘and the ‘Eurovision Song Contest’ but it paid off!
The route home was a bit of a blur – although I am sure the scenery was spectacular for anyone that had the time to admire it! After this ‘cavalry charge for home’ Fliss and Tarran, myself and Stig, managed to scrape home in just under two hours, taking first and second place respectively with heart rates of 39 & 40.
A very commendable joint third place went to Amber Winson riding Wilma and Georgie Scutt riding Snap. This was only Amber’s second competitive ride and Georgie’s first so very well done indeed to both of them. Close behind were Mandy, Emily and Caroline – a couple of minutes faster than Amber and Georgie but with slightly higher heart rates. Thanks as always to Anna and David for all their hard work, Tina and Veronica from the mountain and moorland, Helen and Steve, Di for the catering, anyone I may have missed out and last but not least of course Carol for the lovely cakes!!!

Vectis Quiz Night at Brickfields - Tuesday 19 April
The Annual Vectis Quiz held at Brickfields on 19th April attracted 14 teams from other horse related clubs and groups. Vectis Chairman, Di Andrews, set the questions on a wide variety of subjects including Royalty, Animal Kingdom, Not so Obvious, Fruit and Horse World. In addition teams had a word quiz and photo round. These were supplied by Bev and Max Snudden and consisted of photos of every day garden objects taken fron unusual angles. There were some very high scoring rounds but, eventually, the Hunt Supporters forged ahead, winning the competition shield and £50 prize. In second, 16 marks behind the winners were the Foresters ( one of 3 mountain & moorland teams) and third were the Liphook Luvvies, only 4 marks behind the Foresters. Winning the booby prize of ‘Grow Your Own Brain’ kits were the very sporting Wilmingham Wonders.
1st : Hunt Supporters; Eve Ablitt, Heather Callaway, Di Rann, Andrew King.
2nd: M&M Foresters: Rosemary Edwards, Hilary Box, Chris Hiller, Ronnie Bingham
3rd: Liphook Luvvies: Jackie Woodford, Wendy Deacon, Kate Manners, Justine Kane-Smyth
Competitive & LDR at Park Down Barns 10 April 2011
By Fliss Crouch
The weather was absolutely brilliant - blue skies and sunshine all day with no wind, perfect for riding and socialising afterwards! The venue of Jenny Morris's is in an idyllic setting with plenty of parking space and room to walk horses before and after.
As always, event organised with professional efficiency - Anna trotting up horses and sending everyone off at timed intervals with easy to read instructions! Can't wait to see the pictures, David made sure he recorded everyone leaving and returning!
This is the second time I have completed the ride with Tarran and this year's conditions were totally different. Very dry and hard ground made the first third of the ride a lot slower with long down hill chalky slopes threatening to be slippery. But once we crossed the road at Shalcombe our horses told us we had to speed up and after the one muddy track to the top of Mottistone there was no stopping us, lots of cantering most of the way home, with no time to appreciate the amazing sea views and flora along the way! (That's what Hilary said anyway!)
This was the first time Vectis has linked up with Mountain and Moorland, so the competitive ride had a healthy number of entries totalling 13. A mix of familiar names and faces along with several newcomers. In particular, entering their first competitive ride: Kevin Cook on Imp; Amber Marie Winson on Wilma and Flo Sanders on Keira; also Emily Steen on Roxy joined Mum Mandy for the first time.
We are now looking forward to the next ride on 15 May from Little Kennerly, Godshill.

Dressage at Lake Farm, Sunday 13th March 2011.
The weather was perfect for dressage at Lake Farm on Sunday 13th March.
The judge Sheena Russell particularly liked the winner of class 1, Murphey IX and would have liked to have taken him home with her! Alison Hill rode a lovely test and achieved a score of 67.73% to win the class ahead of Martine Harbour on her young Sonny Jim who scored 65.91%
Imogen Moss and her Een Twee Luckee performed 2 excellent tests gaining a score of 70.38% in the novice to win the class beating Trudi Gatrell and Decadence D 67.31%. Then again to win the elementary with another very good score of 67.94% Again Trudi came 2nd with 64.71%
Fiona King and Wima F Vejgard produced a calm and excellent medium test achieving a very good score of exactly 70% to win from Vicky Clarke and Chakotay 64.12%
It was nice to see some new combinations trying the hardest test of the day the Advanced Medium 85. Sarah Holmes rode 2 nice tests on her two horses in the training section and on both horses managed to produce identical scores of 64.41%
The class was won jointly by Carla Maskell on Be Fine and Becky Wastall on Master Rubin both scoring a massive 69.12%

Our first unaffiliated dressage competition for 2011 was held on Saturday 5th February at Lake Farm. Members braved a very windy day to come and compete. mainland to judge the three other classes, she said, she was impressed with the standard and smart turnout of all our riders. Thanks to Mike Morris for collecting the judge from the ferry, and Linsay White & Jenny Morris for writing for our judges.
If you are not riding at any of our events, and you would like to help with the running of the day, please get in touch. je.frost@btinternet.com
Next dressage Sunday 13th march ,unaffiliated morning, affiliated afternoon.
RC Dressage to Music National Champs
Riding Club DTM Championships at Aintree October 2010
Having finally recovered from the shock of qualifying at Sparsholt in May for the DTM Champs AND finding out that it was to be held at Aintree in Liverpool, time seemed to fly and October was rapidly approaching.
Unfortunately we didn’t have the best preparation as my mare, Hope, picked up a virus during July and have to have nearly 8 weeks rest to recover. Being a half Clydesdale mare she needs to kept fit to keep her waistline down and perform at her best (the same could be said of her rider, too!!). We had a little under a month to bring her back up to some form of fitness, and I am very grateful to Anita Niccolls for giving both horse and rider a form of “boot camp” to get us going again!
When Peter and I looked on the map Liverpool was an extremely long way up the country – next stop Scotland or so it seemed!! As we have an HGV lorry and are limited on driving hours, we decided to go up in two hops and break the journey with a friend near Addington in Buckinghamshire. We had the added stress of having to have some work done on the lorry which only got finished the night before we left!!
We travelled to Buckingham on Thursday morning, and on Friday lunchtime arrived at Aintree EC, which is situated on the famous Aintree Racecourse.
Having had our flu certificate checked we settled Hope into the racecourse boxes, had lunch and some liquid refreshment (yes, it was champagne!) and set out to explore.
What an iconic setting. The stables were at one end of the grandstands, and to get to the arena you had to go along the horsewalk in front of the grandstands. Unfortunately in places it was only one horse’s width wide, so there was quite a lot of waiting in passing places over the weekend. The arena was very light and airy, but unfortunately the only place to work in was the adjacent collecting ring which was about 40m x 25m! The only other place you were allowed to ride was on the gallops after 4.30pm when maintenance work had finished. You could only walk(!) and had to go in pairs. Pam Gardener from IWRC and I went round so as we could truthfully say we had ridden round Aintree!!
Hope was quite tired from the long trip, and I didn’t do too much work with her; we went down to the arena to see the sights and did a few laps of the warm up arena before it got too crowded.
Everyone (competitors and officials) were very friendly and quite amazed that we had come so far. In fact when anyone moaned about their journey, we were mentioned!!
We were competing on Sunday afternoon, and watched the quadrille competition on Saturday night. It was so funny to see people in v strange costumes in the stabling, and very long suffering horses with all sorts of contraptions and decorations attached!!
Sunday dawned, and I wanted to give Hope a bit of work. I can’t get from the ground (old age, fat bottom, etc etc!) and had been using the wall at the front of the stabling. I had to go to a higher bit that usual and had to climb on my knees to get on it. As I am hauling myself up, I catch sight of two large white front feet next to me followed by two large back feet! Hope had hopped up on the wall from a standstill. Well, if mum was going up there, so was she! I could hardly get on for laughing. It had been spotted by someone coming out of the stables, who also was crying with laughter! After exercising, I went down to watch the morning’s DTM tests. Peter kept asking me if I was cold. I wasn’t, I was just shaking with nerves!! At one point I nearly bottled out, but then gave myself a good talking to, and once I started to get Hope ready and myself dressed I was fine.
Julie, who I had bought Hope from, made the trip over the hills from West Yorkshire to come and see us. It was lovely to see her again, but a little daunting to be riding in front of her!!
My time came, tack and turnout was checked, and in we went. Can’t remember too much about the test!! Looked at the video, and yes we could have gone better; but with a half fit horse and a rider with a bad back we didn’t disgrace the Club or ourselves!! I had said on the way there that I wanted to get over 60% and not come last. I achieved both those aims!!
We stayed Sunday night, and travelled home Monday with a lunch break at Buckingham before arriving home Monday evening.
If you are lucky enough to qualify, do go as it is great fun, and a very friendly atmosphere.
Many thanks to the Club for allowing Hope and I to represent them at the Championships.
Wendy Warren, and Hope (aka Truly Scrumptious)

Due to the threat of snow our mainland judge was put off and Trish stepped in to judge for those who were still up for braving the cold. Thankfully the cafe log burner was kept alight which gave us all the chance to warm up.
The Riding Club Royal Windsor Horse Show qualifier was held with five senior and junior riders qualifying for round 2 which will be held at the winter area dressage in January.

Annual General Meeting - 18 November at The Eight Bells
.
A well supported evening saw members presented with their awards which recognised their achievements. Chairman Di Andrews revealed the results of the Froghill Riding Club Horse of the Year competition which was won by Mandy Steen's Dynamite Daisy and so that Mandy was not presented with one of her own prizes she was given a voucher for the Taverners at Godshill. Froghill donated some fabulous prizes down to 10th place. See the results page for placings
The unaffiliated prelim points trophy was jointly won by Anna Morris riding Mirabella and Carole Taylor riding Axle. The unaffiliated novice points was won by Hilary Box riding The Stig, close behind was Sue Morris and Christies Leading Lady. Full results.

The AGM is also an opportunity for the Club to thank those who's help is much apreciated. Mandy at Froghill has been a great support and although the weather seemed to be against us at Froghill this year it was a great venue for the summer unaffiliated dressage and the many fun events organised by Carla and much enjoyed by Vectis members.
Mandy Steen 's Dynamite Daisy winner of the Froghill RC Horse of the Year competition.
Hilary Box's The Stig was in second place by one point.
RC National Dressage to Music Championships
Good luck to Wendy Warren who will be competing at the BRC National Dressage to Music Championships at Aintree this weekend. They qualified back in May at the Area 17 qualifier held at Sparsholt College. Kelly Blow and Sally McIntosh also qualified for the pairs dressage to music but decided not to go.
Junior Team - BRC National Championships 12 September
The Juniors represented Vectis at the National Riding Club Championships at Lincoln, and by the sounds of the stories I have heard they had a really good time! The following is a report written by Sammi Henton about their time away.
It all started early again for us juniors on the 11th of September, but of course we didn't mind at all - we were off to the National Dressage Championship's at Lincoln! Soon after 5.30am two horses were loaded into our first lorry going up to Lincoln; which took a team effort of myself and five other people to get my naughty Kallistar up the ramp! We caught the ferry and enjoyed a nice breakfast on the boat, then it was time to hit the roads to Lincoln!
After many laughing fits in the lorry and me and Courtney singing every song imaginable we had arrived at Lincoln! Somehow Abbie and Nat had managed to blow up their DVD player; all they heard was a "bang, bang" and a puff of smoke! Which was a let down as they had planned to watch Seabiscuit! As we arrived we saw the many dressage arena's set up in the enormous field and started to get even more excited!
After stretching the ponies, we all started getting our stables ready for the night, the ponies were soon settled and we all went off to explore the showground! After going shopping and buying the jumpers with the names of our ponies on them, we went to our lorries and enjoyed a very nice barbicue! We all enjoyed ourselves and giggled alot! Soon it was time to memorise the tests again before heading to bed!
We were up early again at 5.30am, well most of us anyway! Off we went to feed the ponies in our pyjama's - which was slightly eventful as I was nearly sick! A little while later it was plaiting and scrubbing time! Soon afterwards it was time for Courtney and Abbie to do their tests - they both did very well and did the team proud! An hour later me and Nat got on our ponies and started working them in - Kali was very calm until passing the showjumping arenas! Our tests went well and we were pleased with our ponies; even though both the riders and the ponies were very excited! The ponies relaxed in their stables while we went to recieve our tests sheets, and buy some lovely photograph's! Our team came 11th in the riding test and 17th in the dressage test which was very good seeing as I went wrong on one movement in the dressage test 24. Nat did extremely well coming 3rd in her dressage test prelium 12 and 6th in her riding test 12. The team enjoyed themselves and all did very well!
Thank you for everyone's help with the fundraising for Lincoln!
Junior Team are off to Lincoln for the BRC National Championships
Our Junior Dressage team members are off to Lincoln this weekend 11 & 12 September for the BRC National Championships. They will be competing in the Junior Team Dressage and Junior Riding Test Team competition after qualifying at the area event in July. Sammi also qualified individually for prelim test 12.
Courtney, Sammi, Natasha & Abby have been hard at work fund raising for the event and have been working hard with their ponies and will hopefully be rewarded with good results at Lincoln.

Team: Mandy Steen - Dynamite Daisy, Carla Maskell - Be Fine, Caroline Cooper - Perrone Pazzaz, Trudi Gattrell - Decadence D. Crew: Anna, Marie, Rhona, Tina, Di & Chris.
Trudi's Report
4am on the 4th September on my 40th birthday seemed like too many 4's to me!
Lorry loaded, horses in and off we go to catch 6.55am ferry at Yarmouth. Long journey but uneventful, arrive at about 12.30pm.
Pete and Prada travel well and both look nice and relaxed. Unload and let them have a couple of hours to chill out in their new bedrooms while we sort lorry into our bedroom and find food.
Sat evening we walk horses in hand and have a practise run at the vetting area as the Princess Prada was a little naughty at the qualifier - all seems well and she is behaving!
Horses to bed and we're off to the pub! Thankfully in a car, driven by the lovely Chris. All team members taking it seriously and no alcohol passes our lips! Well Caroline has a small glass of wine, but that's to make up for Pete's legs being shorter than the rest!!
Everyone sings Happy Birthday to me, cards and pressies and cake, all very nice!
In bed, Oh No only an hours sleep and my matress is deflated, being 40 is really not fun!
Sunday morning and we're all up at 7am. Got to be ready for vetting at 10am and judging of turnout. Wish P Prada was acting more calmly, she looks scary! Everyone eats bacon butties and tea, I only manage tea!
10am arrives and we all look really smart in our Ariat jackets(sponsered by Froghill) white Jods, white Ariat tops and black boots. Carla puts quarter marks on the horses bums, Vectis "V" looks good.
All horses behave at vetting. Vets have been forwarned about the "ginger one!" and I get a nice calm lady vet, thou P Prada must know somethings up cos her ticker is going at 54, better than mine at 540, I'm sure!! Half an hour allowed till the start, so rush back to stables. Pete and Daisy behaving very well. Dressage Diva's PNut and Prada acting like they cannot be parted! Wish Princess Prada didn't look like she's gonna buck me off! Time to get on, one foot in the stirrup and OH NO Prada's gone airbourne! Blooming redhead!,O.K Auntie Carla holds the head end and at last I'm on!Off to the start, judge looks at us and off wCarla and Mandy go. Caroline and I start 5 minutes later.
Prada seems to know its a long ride, cos at any excuse she's grinding to a halt and Peter has to give us a lead. At last one km in and the Princess has decided to play ball, off we go! 31kms at tror and canter, nice finish along the race track, and a photographer at the finish. Time to shorten reins bit of sitting trot and "YES!" I have the perfect picture of a dressage queen finishing the 1030 race at Southwell!!
The ride is over, but we now have only 30 minutes to cool horses off and present at vetting. Lots of sponging and time in the stable for a quick wee (Prada!) apparently it helps with lowering heart rate!
Vetting goes well Princess Prada behaves and her heart rate is down to 42.
Back to stables, chance to talk to Mandy and Carla. Poor Mandy, Daisy had a slight hind lameness so failed the vetting. Luckily the other 3 were ok so we had a team score. Daisy seems fine after a rest.
4pm time for prizegiving. Our scrubbing and cleaning did good, we came 2nd in the turnout. I'm sure the very nice jackets helped!!
Now the ride results, all really close and we are 3rd! A very good achievement as the 1st placed team had an experianced endurance rider!
M
Prada PNut and Pete all gain grade 1 passes. Daisy would have too if she hadn't limped in front of the vet!
Time to walk the horses in hand and bed down.
Then off to the town of Southwell to PARTY!!
Many thanks go to our crew members: Anna, Marie, Rhona, Tina, Di, Chris and my wonderful Hubby DaveXXMore pics in the Gallery
Unaffiliated Dressage at Froghill - 29 August
Once again a very friendly welcome at Froghill and a really enjoyable day.
Vectis RC Horse of the Year 2010
This year's competition is really hotting up as the season draws to an end. Click here to see the latest points table. Who's going to win?
Competitive ride - 22 August at Park Down Barns
10 August 2010 - Unaffiliated Dressage at Froghill
25 July 2010 - Showing show at Godshill
Despite an unpromising start to the day, the weather turned out to be ideal for the showing show held at Godshill for the first time. Pony classes were very well filled, with the 14.2 & under Riding Pony Class having to be split. Sammi Henton’s Kallistar shone, winning both the Coloured Class & the 14.2h.h. & under Riding Pony and also gaining places in the Jumping.
Another winner and racing up the HOY points board is The Stig who, with owner Hilary Box, won both the Show Hunter and the Riding Club Horse Classes. Mainland showing judge, Sue Courtney, made new member Blue Bailey-Hunt another dual winner, awarding her the 13.2 Show Hunter Pony and the Riding Pony with Daukester Hector, whilst Dynamite Daisy showed her versatility by winning the Riding Horse Class and being 3rd in the Handy Hunter. This latter class was won by the evergreen Axel who took charge over the jump, much to the surprise and slight horror of his rider Carole Taylor.
The youngest rider, Jimmy Saunders and Leo, one of the oldest ponies, won the best veteran, plus the special for the best over 20 year old. The junior riders made up for a lack of numbers by the volume of noise generated by them and their supporters when contesting the gynkhana games, ably run by Trudi Gatterell and her team. Helen Wood was our course builder, as usual, for the jumping classes ranging from 18” – 2’9” which saw a very good proportion of clear rounds.
Our junior riding test team ran a very successful raffle with a huge array of prizes, bringing their travelling fund for the Championships up to £600. Well done to them for showing such enthusiasm and determination to compete in the finals.
A huge thank you to our many helpers; to local judges Anna Reed and Heather Hicks; to commentator Andy Hicks and to Bill Davison for setting up the P.A. system. Also, thanks to Mandy Steen for the loan of her jumps, yet again
18 July 2010 - Area Dressage Qualifier at Broadlands Farm Estate
We had an early start on Sunday morning and with Deb Harris on standby (lorry rescue!!) we managed to all arrive at Broadlands without incident.
As usual it was the Juniors that achieved the best results at the BRC Area 17 Summer Dressage Qualifier at Broadlands Estate, Romsey last sunday.
Junior members, Natasha Coventry riding Chamlord Chardonnay, Abigail Denham riding Forest Gump, Courtney Sandison riding Lowri and Sammi Henton riding Kallistar won the Riding Test Team competition, qualifying for the British Riding Clubs National Championships held at Lincoln in September. The same team were also second in the junior team dressage competition missing first place by just one point.
Sammi Henton also rode an almost perfect prelim test 12 to win with a very high score of 75% and will also qualify for the National Championships in this class. The girls' are now hard at work arranging fund raising events and looking for sponsors to help with expenses to compete at the Championships.
Picture left to right: Courtney Sandison, Sammi Henton, Abigail Denham, Natasha Coventry.Senior members' Kelly Blow riding Mirabella, Imogen Moss riding Een Twee lucky, Trudi Gattrell riding Decadence and Sally McIntosh riding Southborne Sibena came 6th in the Dressage Team competition. Kelly was placed 3rd in Novice 24 and Trudi was placed 6th in test 28. Kelly and Sally were 5th in the pairs. Wendy Warren was 8th in the riding test and competed as an individual.
More pictures to follow.

Supper Ride at Godshill - 23 June
12 riders enjoyed a ride across Stenbury Downs in beautiful weather on Wednesday 23rd. June. Everyone managed not to get lost and returned to enjoy a barbecue supper at Di’s house along with other members who came just for the food!
Evening Dressage 30th June
The Club was lucky enough to enjoy the third event in a row with perfect weather when 30 tests were ridden
at the evening dressage. We had 2 arenas so that it could be finished within 2 hours, well before dark, allowing those who had hacked to get home comfortably in the light.Judges Sue Thwaites(Test 7) and Jackie Woodford (Test 12) were unanimous in their choice of preliminary winners, both marking Sammi Henton on Kallistar and Dawn Norris with Ricardo’s Lucky Boy into 1st & 2nd respectively. Heather Nelson and Captain Jack won Intro A and Lizzie Ward and Masquerade were first in Novice 24 by a narrow margin over a second placed Beate Parsons on Paginini.
Thanks to our judges and to everyone who helped make the evening run so smoothly.

At the time of this event it was the hottest day of the year! This definitely put some people off! Those who did compete enjoyed the ride despite the heat. For the first time at an Island ride we crewed the horses before they started offering water and a good cooling slosh. The ground was baked hard so riders took this into account when deciding where to push on and where to slow down. The route took in Chillerton Downs from where the views were spectacular. Fortunately there were plenty of water troughs along the way and the competitors arrived back with all the horses looking good. A lot of water was thrown over the horses (and Fliss!) to get those vital heart rates down.
The final results were really close and a credit to the riders and the fitness of their horses. First was Carla Maskell on Be Fine. Second was Mandy on Dynamite Daisy. Third was Caroline Cooper on Peronne Pazazz and fourth was Sue Hudson on Dublin Bay. Successful completions were achieved by Carol Whittington on Axel, Hilary Box on The Stig, Fliss Crouch on Tarran, Kelly Blow on Mirabella and Julie Wannop-Corney on Mosshill Miley. Points were also awarded towards HOYS and the Competitive Ride Trophy.
Summer Festival at Godshill - Sunday 20 June
Entries were up on the last few years for the Club’s Annual Dressage Festival held on 20 June at Godshill. The weather was perfect, fine and sunny but with a strong breeze in the competition area just right for riding. |
Endurance Team WIN for Vectis!
We had a super time at Berks Downs! The route was over rolling countryside with no gates which was a relief to us gate plagued Islanders. The course was well marked by red spray painted arrows so nobody got lost! Although it was a pity not more teams were entered we were very pleased to win! Each of the Vectis squad riders did splendidly including Fliss Crouch on her game 23 yr old. Sadly they parted company not far from the end so walked to the finish where Fliss was checked over and her horse was expertly attended by a vet. That left her daughter Trudi Gatrell to finish alone on the dressage diva Decadence who was markedly better behaved at the end compared to the beginning! The other dressage specialist Carla Maskell's Be Fine appeared to be thoroughly enjoying the whole experience and had his usual calming influence on Mandy Steen's talented but sometimes fizzy Dynamite Daisy. Emma Broadhurst coped expertly with 20 yr old Lilly who really didn't see any point in timings and strongly felt she ought to be on the race ride ! Emma and Lilly were teamed with Caroline Cooper on her good pony Peronne Pazazz the smallest in stature in our squad but with a great big heart . The end result was that the five finishers all attained Grade Ones and we are confident that Fliss's Tarran would have done the same as they consistently have low heart rates at Island events. The French Formula was then used to determine the final placings. Vectis squad gained first place! The riders were crewed at the specified crew points and at the finish by Tina Murrant, Pauline Wade, David and Jessica Gatrell, Dave Dana and Anna Lek who kindly also made the journey over that extremely expensive stretch of water to give their invaluable help. We all finished up on the same ferry home still feeling hot and a tad tired but triumphant! Team Vectis is now qualified for the National Finals in September. Area Dressage to Music
The Area 17 Dressage to Music qualfier was held at Sparsholt on Bank Holiday Monday 31 May. Four horses and riders travelled to the event, Marty Davison riding Geart, Sally McIntosh riding Sibena, Wendy Warren riding and Kelly Blow riding Mirabella.
Kelly and Sally (Pic right) managed to come equal first in the Pairs class which seemed very unlikey after their first practise. Wendy Warren came second in her section totally surprising herself and Peter and she will qualify for the finals at Aintree in September. Marty came fourth in her section.
Other results were Sally riding Sibena came second in prelim 18, and Marty riding Geart came second in prelim 12.

Royal Windsor Horse Show
Kelly Blow rode Sammi Henton's pony Kallistar at the BRC Riding Test round three qualifier at the Royal Windsor Horse Show finishing in 11th place. Placings were very close and Kelly rode a lovelly test.
Kelly qualified in round one back in January at Lake Farm. Round two was held at the winter area dressage qualifier at Newbury with round three at the Royal Windsor Horse Show.
There will be a round one Riding Test qualifier for the Royal Windsor Horse Show 2011 at the Summer Festival on June 20 at Godshill. For more info click here
Vectis Quiz
Vectis held its Annual Quiz at Brickfields in April, when 13 teams from Clubs and groups took part, including past winners: Mountain & Moorland, West Wight Riding Club and last year’s winners, The I.W. Riding Club. Questions were set by V.E.C Chairman, Di Andrews and included rounds on: Animal World, Food & Drink, Current News and Spelling. Bev Snudden provided 2 photo rounds which showed common objects from the garden & house, taken from unusual angles.
The 3 Clubs above soon went into battle, and eventually, the Isle of Wight Riding Club regained the trophy and took the 1st prize of £50. Their team consisted of Mon Yates; Fi Vanassche, Janet Morter & Heidi Carden. 2nd place went to the Mountain & Moorland, 3rd to West Wight & 4th to Froghill.
Many thanks to everyone who entered into the fun spirit of the quiz, especially Vicky Lacey , Martin & team who maintained their unbeaten record of winning the booby prize.
Vectis RC Horse of the Year
For the second year we will be running our RC Horse of the Year competition which we are very pleased to annouce that once again Froghill Tack will be the sponsors.
As last year, points will be gained by the horse at shows throughout May to October in show jumping, dressage, showing and LDR and the winning horse will be annouced by Di under great suspense at the AGM in November. The horse may be ridden by different riders as it the horse that is judged. Riders will need to register their interest on entry forms.
Many thanks to Mandy at Froghill Tack for her continued support.
Atherfield Farm Competitive Ride 2010
On 4th April we held a Long Distance Ride from Atherfield Farm by kind permission of Ann Henton. After having to cancel rides from last year onwards due to the horrendous weather conditions it was a great relief that the weather was so lovely. The route was just over 15 miles long and took in some considerable climbs, lots of gates and some good fast stretches. There were spectacular views in all directions! Seven combinations contested the competitive ride and the final results were extremely close. Tied first were Mandy Steen on the improving Daisy and Fliss Crouch on the evergreen Tarran. Second was Caroline Cooper on Peronne Pazazz who had his best performance so far. Third was Emma Broadhurst on Lily competing for the first time. Fourth was Mylie ridden by Sammi Henton our only junior entry. Fifth was Kelly Blow’s Mirabella closely followed by Carla Maskell’s Be Fine in sixth place.
It was interesting to see dressage specialists doing so well and thoroughly enjoying themselves. It was also apparent that competitors were really improving on their judgement of pace and also aftercare to bring down that crucial heart rate.
The next Island based ride (with points going towards HOYS as well as the LDR series) will be on 27th June from Little Kennerley Farm, Godshill by kind permission of Dawn Webster. Come along and have a go!

Yellow Fun Day at Froghill - Sun 11 April
Well what a lovely surprise no rain !! a very long day but very enjoyable for those who took part and all who helped . I would first like to thank mandy steen at froghill for the use of the school and the farm for this event and some raffle prizes she donated , i know she was pleased for this event to take place as all proceeds go to the earl mountbatten hospice a charity which is close to mandys heart so thankyou , also thanks to the catering crew mandy allen , heidi, and carole for your lovely cakes and sandwiches , and jodie james for the choc brownies ! thanks to trudi , steve and helen our fussy!! but brilliant course builder and all at froghill who helped . We raised £350 after expences for the hospice .
We started the day with 25 spider riders and some coming from as far as brading, and loads of clear round jumping taking us into the afternoon, all seemed to enjoy the food and atmosphere apart from one horse who decided Di `s house seemed much more appealing and left froghill without her jockey !! making trudi , myself and another rider run very fast ! thankfully everyone and the horse involved are all ok with no injuries .
Then we had barrell racing which the kids ,grown ups and spectators really enjoyed especially fliss who paid twice to have another go ! we also done this as a pairs relay which was great fun except for myself who was running with jessica gattrell who started the day saying no cantering but during barrel racing telling me to run faster !!
then we had games , bending race , flag race , egg and spoon , walk trot canter walk , chase me charlie which the winner jodie bircham jumped about 4ft and marni stubbs very close behind in 2nd jumping 22 years young drummer over 3ft 9 !!Well done to all riders who took part and i think it just proves that games is great way of giving children the confidence and fun to have a go at something they probably wouldnt normally do.

RWHS Qualifier
Congratulations to Kelly Blow, she has just found out that her second place in the round 2 dressage qualifier was enough to qualify for the championships at the Royal Windsor Horse Show in May.
RC Area 17 Winter Qualifier at Hampstead Marshall - 31 January 2010
One senior team and one junior team braved the cold weather conditions to represent Vectis at the Area 17 winter dressage qualifier. Our Junior team of Natasha Coventry, Abbey Denham, Courtney Sandison and Sammi Henton all rode very well with Natasha and Abbey winning their arenas and Courtney having to ride Mirabella at the last minute as her pony's flu vac was rejected by the event organiser.
Our senior team of Kelly Blow riding Mirabella, Sally McIntosh riding Kallistar, Imogen Moss riding Een Twee Lucky and Hilary Box riding The Stig all rode good tests with Imogen being placed third in her arena.
Kelly Blow also rode Kallistar in the RWHS round 2 qualifier finishing in second place very annoyingly by only 1/2 % so Kelly is hoping for a wild card qualifying place so she can compete at the Royal Windsor Horse Show - Fingers crossed.
Below is an account of the day by our Junior team
The 31st January 2010 started early for the junior Vectis team. Despite the cold weather the team still made it onto the 7.30 ferry (only just!), even if half of them were in their pyjamas!
After a laugh in the lorry it was finally time to get down to some serious stuff with Sammi heading into the ring 1st (after only 5minutes of warming up!) and doing a great job coming home with individual 4th. Second into the ring, was Courtney who also came home with individual 4th. Third to ride for team Vectis was Natasha, who came back to the IOW with individual 1st. Last but not least to ride was Abbie, who also done a fab job to also bring home individual 1st!
Then it was time to sit down on the lorry ramp, have a laugh and eat weenies (the team’s word for sausages). After that we walked over to the score board which was looking good!
Soon it was time for the team to return back home at around 3.30. However we had to leave Sammi there to collect the rosettes who returned with 8! The team came back with 3rd and everyone had a great day and we can’t wait for the next one!
Best wishes,
Abbie, Sammi, Courtney and Natasha
Thank you to the following people:
Sally, Jane, Helen, Amanda, Kelly, Louise, Anna, Sharon, Karen and the team mascot (Harriet Maud Weenie!)

Vectis Horse of the year sponsored by Froghill Tack
We have held the last of the competitions counting towards the points championships. Members were able to win points during 4 Dressage days and 4 Show Jumping days, 2 Long Distance Rides and 1 Showing Show with several classes per height. By the end, there was some keen competition between the top few riders and it was hard to guess who was going to come out as the eventual winner. But in true X factor style, I’m not telling you now, and you’ll have to come to Boot Camp (the A.G.M.) where all will be revealed.
So, in no particular order , the top ten who will be receiving rosettes and the Froghill Tack prizes are:
Corinth- Jodie James; Kali Star- Sammy Henton; Stream- Abi & Karen Denham; The Stig- Hilary Box; Shamlord Sunrise- Natasha Coventry; Dynamite Daisy- Mandy Steen; Forest Gump-Abi Denham; Khandi Dee- Melissa Penfield-Wells; Mosshill Myle- Julie Wannop-Corney & Christie’s Leading Lady- Sue Morris.
Well done to everyone and thanks for making it such a good competition.
See you all at the A.G.M.
Competitive Distance Ride
We held our second competitive Long Distance Ride on October 11th. Starting from Jenny & Mike Morris’s barns at Apse Down, the ride went up over the downs at the back and into Brighstone Forest, completing a circular ride taking in Westover & Shalcombe.
Organised, once more, by our long distance expert, Anna Lek, this ride attracted 9 enthusiastic competitors (an eighty percent increase on last time!). Luckily, the weather improved on earlier in the week and everyone completed the ride in time with only a few losing their way. Anna’s partner, Dave was given the job of taking the horses’ heart rates (as he is the only one with his own stethoscope!) and this was taken before the start and compared with the rate at the end of the ride after a short rest. Anna checked horses for soundness and for hydration by pinching the skin on the neck and seeing how long it took to revert to normal.
Points were awarded for all these factors and, for the second time, Fliss Crouch was awarded first place with Tarran, a great achievement in fitness as he is 22 years old. In second place was stable mate Dynamite Daisy with owner Mandy Steen showing an unexpected talent for long distance riding. In 3rd was Karen Denham and her pony, Stream while 4th went to Mandy’s ride companion, Carla Maskell and Be Fine, having a change from their usual activity of affiliated dressage. Many thanks to Mike & Jenny for providing the venue and the refreshments for the spider riders, as well as the long distance riders. Also, thank you to Anna for introducing this discipline into our Club calendar, to Dave for wielding his stethoscope so professionally and to Andy Hicks for once again proving invaluable as timekeeper.
We are planning to have a succession of L.D.R.s with a points trophy awarded at next year’s A.G.M. so we hope a few more members will be encouraged to have a go. The first of these will be on 29th November starting from the Old Smithy Car Park.
Showing & Jumping show 4th October
Although, entries were low for some of the horse classes, the enjoyment for those taking part was high. The pony classes were hotly contested with Natasha Coventry and Shamlord Sunrise taking both the small Show Hunter Pony and the Riding Pony classes, while her Aunt, Karen Denham, won the large Show Hunter and the small Condition & Turnout with Stream. Heidi Carden and Raffles, also, had a successful day, winning the large Show Hunter and the over 15h.h. Condition & Turnout. It was good to see some of our members children taking part in the fun classes; for some it was their first show and we hope they enjoyed it enough to do it again. We are grateful to our local judges: Miss Penny Barnes and Mr. Simon Reed and to mainland judge, Mrs. June Witham. All three proved very patient, kind and helpful and we thank them for giving up their time. Thank you to our Committee who were all involved in one way or another and in particular to Helen Wood who is determined to see our members doing more jumping.

RC Area Dressage at Moreton EC
Our Junior Team
L to R Shelly Moss, Imogen Moss, Abbey Denham & Natasha Coventry
With many lame horses and riders we were unfortunately unable to send a Senior dressage team this year so thank goodness we have our Juniors to save the day and represent Vectis at this area competition accompanied by Kelly Blow riding as our only senior competing individually.
It was definitely a day of fours! Our Junior team consisting of Imogen Moss - Een Twee Luckee, Shelley Moss - Cadlam Valley Lucky Charm, Natasha Coventry - Shamlord Sunrise and Abbey Denham - Forest Gump came a credible 4th as a team and were also placed 4th in the riding test team competition.
Kelly Blow riding Mirabella as a senior individual was 4th in Novice 30, 4th in Elementry 48 and continuing the trend of the day was 4th in Medium 64.
Other individual results were Imogen 4th (the last one!!) and Shelley 6th in the riding test. Natasha was 5th in Prelim 13.
Well done to all our riders and helpers it was successful and enjoyable day.

WELL DONE TO ALL OUR RIDERS
HOY Evening Dressage
The third of our events in which members can earn points towards our Horse of the Year Competition for which Froghill Tack is providing the prizes was our evening dressage at Hyl Villa, Godshill on 3rd July.
Our Judges: Sue Thwaites and Jackie Woodford were kept busy for 2 hours with nearly 30 entries.
Again, we were very lucky to have a fine evening with a breeze which made it ideal for the competitors.
The Denham/ Coventry brigade had a clean sweep, with their ponies winning every class. Thanks to everyone who helped to make everything run smoothly.
HOY Competitive Ride
The Club’s first endurance ride competition at the end of June saw just 5 stalwart riders entering and completing the 10 mile ride. The ride had to be completed at a speed of 6- 7.5 miles an hour and the horses’ heartbeats were taken at the start and finish of the ride. All 5 completed it well within the time and so, the heart rate recovery played a crucial part in deciding the winners. Very well done to Fliss Crouch and Tarran who emerged the final winners, closely followed by Mandy Steen with Dynamite Daisy.
Many thanks to Anna Lek who mapped out the course and ran the event with the help of her partner David. The riders all enjoyed the wonderful views on what turned out to be a beautiful evening. They were then joined by the pleasure riders and friends for a supper at Hyl Villa.

Controlling Ragwort
There has been a great deal of publicity about ragwort in recent years so all horse owners should already be aware of the danger that this plant poses to their animals. Common ragwort (Senecio jacobaea) contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids. These toxic compounds principally cause damage to the liver that often leads to death. Horses are particularly susceptible to the effects of ragwort but other grazing animals are also at risk and humans should take precautions (e.g. gloves) when handling the plant.
There is a commonly held belief that horses will not voluntarily eat ragwort. It is true that most animals will avoid it but it is not enough to rely on this – ragwort should always be cleared from the pasture. Where the sward is sparse and over-grazed, horses may consume ragwort and it has been suggested that some animals may develop an acquired taste for the plant. When cut or wilted (during hay or haylage making) ragwort loses its bitter taste but none of its toxicity. It becomes far more palatable and harder for the horse owner to spot, thus posing more of a danger.
The effects of ragwort poisoning are cumulative, consuming small amounts over a long period of time is just as dangerous as consuming a large amount in a single session. When a horse eats ragwort, the pyrrolizidine alkaloids it contains are absorbed into the body from the intestines. The alkaloids then pass to the liver where they are metabolised to produce toxins that damage liver cells. When these cells die they are replaced by fibrous tissue and a point is eventually reached where there are not enough liver cells left to maintain liver function. By this time liver failure is inevitable.
The clinical signs of ragwort poisoning are not normally apparent until liver failure has occurred, and at this point there is usually little that can be done for the affected animal. The signs themselves are typical of liver failure and manifest themselves suddenly and without warning. A key sign is that the horse will display bizarre or depressed behaviour. This is thought to be because the liver is no longer able to cleanse the blood of chemicals or toxins that may affect the brain. Photosensitisation may also be seen and is the inflammation of unpigmented areas of skin when they are exposed to sunlight. Again this is thought to be due to the liver’s inability to remove toxins. Other signs include jaundice, weight loss and diarrhoea.

Strictly Come Prancing
‘Come Prancing’ lived up to its reputation as an evening of fun and entertainment when the fourth Annual event took place at Brickfields on 16th May.
A huge amount of effort had gone into the costumes and performances of our acts. Our members
pulled out all the stops to amaze and entertain us with their interpretation of different themes.
Olly Staff and Kate Suitor decided to come as individuals, this year; Kate doing a great military display dressed as a very dashing soldier, complete with bearskin, while Olly was a more demure ‘Dorothy’ (complete with sequinned red shoes), riding the tin man from the Wizard of Oz..
In spite of a little technical difficulty, Abi Newnham got everyone moving with Abi’s Gym, while former winners: Sally McIntosh & Kelly Blow with Laura Windle & Anna Morris were giving a great dressage interpretation of Pirates of the Caribbean, until one of the pirate’s horses did its best to make its rider walk the plank!
The winner of the ‘Best Costume Award’ went to Polly Kitcher who wore a beautiful dress & hat of mauve & cream with a mediaeval theme. Polly was accompanied by Sarah James and Katie Stevens, suitably attired, as her heralds, in co-ordinating costumes.
The judges 1st place went to Mary Poppins (Vicky Lacey) with a guest appearance of Martin as the kite-flyer.
The audience choice was a tie between Carla Maskell and Natasha Coventry & Abigail Denham.
Natasha & Abi were dressed as ghostbuster and ghost (riding an incredibly tolerant ghost pony) and their routine went down extremely well with the younger members of the audience. Carla was dressed as Elvis and did a very fast routine while the hound dogs, accompanied by mother Carole and a friend, performed their own display.
A special thanks to our judges- Vicky Clark (Technical); Lorna Neale (Choreography; Caroline Jacobs (Music) and Kate Green ( Entertainment.); and, of course, a huge thanks to our compere,
Ruth Poorsight, aka Linda Jurd, who entered into the spirit of the occasion and kept us amused between acts.
Finally, a huge thank you to Jane Frost, who, as usual, encourages everyone to have a go and does so much behind the scenes.
Well done to everyone who was part of the evening.
!!!"SUCCESS"!!! for Vectis at the RC Dressage to Music Championships
Carla & Be Fine
A huge amount of work has paid off for Carla Maskell as she came second in the Riding Club Elementry Freestyle to Music Championship at Addington riding her handsome bay gelding Be Fine.
Polly Kitcher riding Oliver Twist has also made the club proud by finishing in fifth place in the Junior Novice Freestyle Championship.
